That which is not there – The Generali Historical Archive takes part in Archivissima 26
27 May 2026
Historical Archive Generali
The Generali Historical Archive will be one of more than 400 archives from Italy and abroad represented in Archivissima, the first Italian festival dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of historical archives, which this year has as its theme, "That which is not there".
The archive will feature in a special event to mark the Notte degli Archivi (Archives Night) and the associated Giornata Internazionale degli Archivi (International Archives Day) on Friday, June 5. The event will include four exclusive guided tours, open for bookings to the general public, which include a walk through the city to appreciate some of Trieste’s most prominent examples of neoclassical architecture, in the company of Francesca Pitacco, president of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region’s tour guides. Among the sights on the tour are the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi, the city’s cultural hub, the Palazzo della Borsa, its economic heart, and Palazzo Carciotti, symbol of local entrepreneurship, commissioned by Demetrio Carciotti. As well as this, the Historical Archive’s headquarters in Palazzo Berlam will also be opened up on a one-off basis in the evening.
This year’s theme: “That which is not there. The sum total of cultural heritage and beauty that we discover or get to appreciate in the course of our lifetime is only the tip of a vast iceberg of cultural wealth that remains hidden [...]. That which is not there but could be again: because it either has been or could be recounted, rebuilt, investigated and reinvented [...]” was imagined in the context of Palazzo Carciotti, and the proposal for a virtual reality experience that will allow participants to immerse themselves in the story of Generali’s founding in the historic building on December 26, 1831 (a moment that has been and gone, but can be relived).
The one-off opening hours will take place from 17:30-20:30, when the fourth and final group of 16 guests will begin its tour.
The first part of the visit will take place outdoors (and lasts 30-35 minutes). The meeting point is in front of Teatro Verdi, in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi. The group will then enter Palazzo Berlam for the second part of the tour, dedicated to the virtual reality experience The Future Where It All Began, designed together with Prodigys, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Canal Grande of 1831, at the time of Generali’s founding, and in the palazzo. In the Archive’s rooms, Assicurazioni Generali’s foundational articles of association will be on display, and guests will be led through the story of Generali’s founding.
