Novecento Italiano from the Generali Collection on View in Rome

Entitled “Novecento Italiano. Works from the Generali Collection”, this exhibition marks Generali’s celebration of the tenth anniversary of Valore Cultura, the program through which the Group makes art accessible and supports Italy’s artistic heritage. Curated by Costantino D’Orazio and organized by Arthemisia, the exhibition is hosted at Palazzo Bonaparte, a historic residence in the heart of Rome and part of Generali’s real estate heritage.

The exhibition itinerary, laid out on the first floor of the Palazzo, is structured across eight rooms, conceived as eight narratives tracing the major phases of Novecento Italiano: from the Avant-Gardes to the Return to Order, from Magic Realism to the Roman School.

The works range from the fragmented figures of the Avant-garde — Le due amiche by Umberto Boccioni, La chute des Anges by Alberto Savinio, Nature morte by Gino Severini, L’Illusionista di campagna by Giuseppe Capogrossi — to landscapes by Ardengo Soffici, Filippo de Pisis, Mario Sironi, Giovanni Fattori and Giorgio de Chirico.

An entire room is dedicated to figures in an interior, featuring La Vecchia by Felice Casorati, La sposa by Antonio Donghi and La pensierosa by Galileo Chini. Another room focuses on studies of the human body, from Massimo Campigli to Fausto Pirandello, from Lorenzo Viani to Mimmo Paladino.

One of the rooms is also entirely devoted to the historic dialogue between art, business and communication: advertising posters by leading poster artists who worked for Generali — Marcello Dudovich, Achille Beltrame, Gino Boccasile, Gian Luciano Sormani, Ferruccio Chiurlotto, Pollione Sigon — and artist-designed scarves by Carla Accardi, Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Gino Marotta, Achille Perilli, Giuseppe Santomaso, Mario Schifano and Toti Scialoja.

Bringing the exhibition itinerary to a close is an unexpected guest of honour: The Three Ages of Woman by Gustav Klimt, an absolute masterpiece in the history of European art, exceptionally loaned by the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. The dialogue between Klimt’s work and the two masterpieces that open and close the Generali Collection itinerary — Boccioni’s Le due amiche and de Chirico’s Self-Portrait — is the exhibition’s most striking feature.
